Regenerative engineering integrates the fields of cell and tissue engineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, cellular and molecular biology and clinical science to restore or replace cell, tissue or organ function or prevent cell, tissue or organ degeneration. This cluster is focused on the development of new biomaterial and cellular constructs, immune-engineering approaches, artificial organs and cell and drug delivery to treat or replace diseased tissues and organs; and the characterization of physico-chemical and physiological tissue properties in normal and pathological states and the use of this knowledge to prevent degeneration and develop therapies. The cluster will be composed of a collaborative group of faculty, students, and affiliates within the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering and several others across the university, primarily in the School of Medicine. In addition, interactions will include partners in other universities and industry. We intend to set up a joint collaborative center of excellence at the University of Miami with the School of Medicine with activities including extensive collaborative research with shared instrumentation facilities, education through coordinated coursework and workshops, seminars and discussion groups, and social networking events.
